Once upon a time, dining out might have been purely about convenience or catching up over a quick bite. And while we'll always have time for Toronto's cheap eats and finding ways to dine at Michelin restaurants on a budget, sometimes we want more than a good meal.
From the city's best restaurants to its best bars, Toronto's dining scene is leaning hard into full-blown culinary theatre. Tableside service turns a standard meal into a front-row performance, whether that means flaming cocktails or pasta tossed inside giant wheels of cheese. Who doesn't want a little drama with their dinner?
The best part is that these presentations aren’t restricted to old-school steakhouse carts. Modern spots across the city are reinventing the concept — rolling out dedicated trolleys for decadent desserts, carving prime cuts right at the table and pouring custom martinis from eye-catching decanters.
Between fiery flambés in the Financial District and hand-carved Peking duck in the core, these showstopping tableside experiences in Toronto make any night out feel like a main event.
The 10 Toronto restaurants to eat at for a tableside experience
1. Punch
30 Mercer St.
On the ground floor of Le Germain Hotel Toronto Mercer, Punch wraps you up in its buzzy Indo-British world of moody booths, bookcases and checkerboard floors. The menu is made for sharing, but make sure you leave room for the grand finale: a tableside chocolate mousse, scooped from a trolley and loaded with Chantilly, caramelized pistachios, raspberries and honeycomb brittle.
2. Mott 32
190 University Ave.
Mott 32 might have outposts from Las Vegas to Hong Kong, but Toronto isn’t left out when it comes to the Peking duck ritual. The multi-level restaurant beside the Shangri-La serves a 42-day, apple wood-roasted duck, which arrives whole before being carved tableside. It comes with steamed pancakes, cucumber and scallions. This duck doesn’t do walk-ins, so order ahead.
3. Estiatorio Milos
330 Bay St.
Showstopping is the name of the game at Estiatorio Milos, and the cocktails are no exception. Order the Milos Martini at this upscale Greek restaurant and servers will pour the classic cocktail from a polished fish-shaped flask right at your side. Your choice of olive oil-infused gin or vodka is shaken with Martini Bianco and saline solution, then strained and poured tableside before being garnished with a lemon twist and feta-stuffed olive.
4. Oretta Downtown
160 Front St W
Why settle for just pasta or pizza when you can have cacio e pepe prepared tableside in a hollowed-out pecorino wheel? Oretta Downtown brings 1970s Milanese glam to the TD Terrace Tower across two levels, but the theatrics definitely don’t stop there. Order the Porchetta Experience and try to keep it together as you watch chefs carve succulent herb-infused pork with perfectly crispy skin right in front of you.
5. Animl Steakhouse
420A Wellington St. W.
If a bedazzled bovine on the ceiling isn’t enough to entertain you at Animl, how about a little tableside razzle-dazzle? Every Sunday, the steakhouse serves a 10-oz Martin’s Family Farm dry-aged prime rib. It comes with Yorkshire pudding and veal jus, but we suggest levelling things up with a side of potato gratin dauphinoise or creamy mashed potatoes.
6. Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar
365 Bay St.
In addition to its tableside caesar salad, Hy’s Steakhouse puts you front row for the flaming presentation of its classic Bananas Foster. Ripe bananas are sautéed in butter, brown sugar and orange juice before dark rum is set alight. The pièce de résistance? A scoop of vanilla ice cream.
7. Black + Blue
130 King St. W.
There are plenty of tableside experiences at this modern steakhouse in the Financial District. But if you have to choose one, go for the eye-catching crêpe suzette for two. The cooking station is wheeled so close, you can feel the heat from the flames as the strawberries are flambéed in Cointreau. It’s also delicious.
8. Reign Bar
100 Front St. W.
Nowhere does all-out luxury quite like the Fairmont Royal York, and Reign restaurant’s moody bar, roaring fireplace and old-school glamour have it in spades. Tucked inside, swanky cocktail bar Monogram takes the glam up another notch with signature cocktails prepared right at your table. Order a classic like a martini or Rob Roy, served smoky or smooth, made with top-shelf spirits and liqueurs and finished tableside for an extra dose of theatre.
9. Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse
81 Bay St. 4th Floor
Store-bought caesar salads will never look the same again. At Jacobs & Co. Steakhouse servers give the classic salad the old-school treatment, wheeling a cart tableside and hand-mixing the dressing from scratch in a huge wooden bowl. Fresh garlic, anchovies, egg yolk, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar and fresh lemon juice are combined before being tossed with romaine lettuce, house-made croutons and double-smoked bacon, then finished with a generous sprinkling of cheese.
10. The Cottage Cheese
64 Oxford St.
Kensington Market isn’t just home to one of the city’s best Indian restaurants — The Cottage Cheese has a little tableside theatre up its sleeve, too. Its biryani features premium basmati rice, layered spices and your choice of vegetables, chicken, lamb or shrimp, slow-cooked in a pot sealed with fresh dough. When it reaches the table, the baked bread lid is sliced open in front of you, sending up a fragrant cloud of steam before you dig in.
