I'm not someone who loves eggs. They have to be the perfect texture, consistency and temperature, or I'm not interested. Too cold and they're an inedible gelatinous mess; too firm, and I might as well be eating chalk; too runny, and I become more aware of what an egg actually is than I'd like. So when I say that the egg-obsession at Toronto's new Eggslut is contagious, it's on good authority. 

Yes, the provocative name might make you do a double-take, but these sandwiches are worth your attention. The L.A.-born, chef-driven concept takes its egg-centred menu seriously.

And yes, the sandwiches do come in around $15, but you're paying for ingredients like cage-free eggs, house-made sausage and hardwood-smoked bacon. Not everyone will be able to taste the difference, but I can, and these sandwiches taste fresh.

The Fairfax, a warm brioche bun piled with soft scrambled eggs and chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and sriracha mayo, is the standout. Normally I struggle to get through a breakfast sandwich of this size, but I gobbled it down like I was trying to beat Joey Chestnut. (If you're not ~cultured~ enough to know the name, he's the world record holder for eating 66 hot dogs in under 10 minutes.) 

If the sandwiches are too rich for your blood, you can always go for the brioche French toast sticks, which come dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a maple custard I could eat with my fingers. The truffle hashbrowns are good, too. 

The eponymous Slut, a little glass jar that holds a potato purée with coddled egg on top, tastes better than it looks, especially if you're into the whole runny-yolk-toast thing. 

The cinnamon toast cold brew isn't as sweet as it sounds — it hits the spot just right. 

I would go back to Eggslut on any office day or downtown excursion when I'm in the mood for a fast, casual breakfast that's substantially filling and feels like a treat.
