Standing the test of time is no easy feat. We've seen plenty of trends spark a moment, then fizzle out before they even catch a flame. That's why a beer with a legacy that's lasted over 150 years stops us in our tracks — especially when that beer was the first of its kind.

Brewed in Plzeň, Czech Republic, in 1842, Pilsner Urquell changed the game when it first came on the scene. Sometimes the best things are the simplest, and this revolutionary beer only uses four ingredients: water, barley malt, Saaz hops and brewer’s yeast. Combined using traditional brewing techniques, including triple mashing, the result was the world's first clear, golden pilsner lager, crafted by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll at Bürger Brauerei, in Pilzen.

Around the globe, brewers took notice of the original pilsner and followed in Pilsner Urquell's footsteps. German pilsners appeared in 1873, the Spaten Brewery followed suit with munich helles in 1894 and brewers in Cologne developed the Kölsch style in 1918.

Since 1842, Pilsner Urquell has been brewed in the same way and used the same pouring method to achieve its signature foam. At 50 per cent beer, 50 per cent CO2, this “wet” foam is unlike others, which are only 25 per cent beer. The silky smooth foam pours from a LUKR faucet, a traditional Czech draught tap with a micro screen. It works on a side pull (ball and joint system) that requires the nozzle to be at the bottom of the glass. It's this attention to detail, tradition and craftsmanship that you can taste in every glass of Pilsner Urquell.

The three pours of Pilsner Urquell

There are three traditional Czech pours of Pilsner Urquell. Hladinka is the classic serve, topped with a rich layer of creamy foam. Šnyt offers a smaller beer with a higher proportion of foam, while Mlíko consists almost entirely of dense, wet foam that delivers a uniquely sweet and creamy taste.

Pilsner Urquell paired with crepes

With Pilzen's water, the softest in the brewing industry, as the base, Pilsner Urquell carries a gentle approach and a complex flavour profile. It complements and enhances the flavours of food, rather than competing with them. The golden lager is right at home on the dinner table, beside everything from fresh salads, creamy soups and seafood to grilled meats and roasted poultry. Of course, the bold Czech, German and Central European dishes are a natural pair. And for those who enjoy ending a meal on a sweet note, Pilsner Urquell pairs surprisingly well with desserts featuring caramel, toasted nuts or rich pastry flavours.
