The internet will argue about absolutely anything, but few debates are as deeply entrenched as the great hot dog debate: Is it a sandwich, or is it its own thing? It's an argument that has sparked backyard disputes, ruined vibes at baseball games and completely taken over social media feeds.

Now, Subway Canada is inserting itself right into the middle of the chaos to officially settle the question. The SubDog is here, and according to Subway, the answer is a resounding yes — a hot dog is a sandwich.

Instead of just dropping a comment and walking away, they are trying to end the argument entirely with their latest limited-edition menu add. To see if the claim holds up, we hung out in the Subway test kitchen in Toronto with chef John Botelho, Culinary Manager of Subway Canada, to see how a backyard staple gets translated into a restaurant chain build.

Subway Testing Kitchen

Inside the Test Kitchen

“People have been debating this for years, but at Subway, we know sandwiches,” says chef Botelho.

“With the SubDog, we’re not just joining the conversation; we’re settling it. This is a classic summer favourite, reimagined the Subway way — fully customizable, built exactly how you want it, with your choice of bread, toppings and sauces.”

The core of the idea is pretty straightforward: bridge classic street meat comfort with actual quality. To do that, Subway partnered with Schneiders, using their all-beef hot dogs.

The real shift from a standard ballpark dog to something resembling an actual sandwich comes down to the bread. Instead of a straight-from-the-plastic bun, the juicy dog is loaded into Subway’s standard fresh-baked bread, which is made from scratch in restaurant every single day.

Completely loaded, exactly how you want it

If you are expecting a tiny snack to eat while walking around a stadium, this isn't it. The SubDog is heavy. It comes in 6-inch and footlong sizes, and the footlong version pushes close to half a pound. It's a massive meal.

The fun part is that you get to treat it exactly like a sub. You walk the garden and build it out with whatever you are craving. Whether you want to keep it simple with classic mustard or completely overload it, it is customization without limits, proving that a hot dog can pull off some serious heavy lifting when it is treated like a sandwich.

  • The Bread: Pick your favourite fresh-baked base from the daily lineup.
  • The Garden: Pile on the crisp veggies, pickles and cheese.
  • The Sauce: Every single Subway sauce on the line works here, meaning you can pivot from basic yellow mustard to a heavy drizzle of garlic aioli.

It's a fun, nostalgic experiment that feels tailor-made for summer, and stepping into the Test Kitchen showed us that it takes Subway's specific setup and baking routine to make the logistics work. But once you see that SubDog nestled into a warm, fresh-baked bun covered in crisp toppings, the whole thing clicks. It turns out a hot dog really can do more when it finally starts thinking like a sandwich.

The SubDog landed at participating Subway locations across Canada for a limited time starting June 29, 2026. You can grab one in-restaurant, online or through the app.
